Hey it’s me Destin, welcome back to Smarter Every Day. So it might surprise you to know that we have hockey at the university that I went to. Anyway today we’re gonna talk about the physics of a slap shot. You’re getting Smarter Every Day. [theme music] [crowd noise] (Destin) No way, you’re missing a tooth? That’s so stereotypical hockey player. Can I see it? What did you, when’d you get your tooth knocked out?
– 3 years ago.
– 3 what?
– 3 and a half years ago. – That’s awesome dude. Is it like a right of passage that you have to lose a tooth in order to play hockey?
– No I mean.. ah.. – Just the good players?
– Just the good ones.
– [laughs] Alright so here’s what we’re gonna do today. We’re gonna hit the puck and record it with a Phantom which I have setup over there, and we’re gonna see exactly what’s happening. I’ve heard that you don’t actually hit the puck first, but I want to look at the dynamics of how that happens. But first, let’s look at your stick here. What kind of stick is it, is it a wooden stick?
– No it’s a one piece composite.
– Yep – Made out of graphite. So mine’s an 85 flex. I like mine a little whippier. – Whippier is 85.. I love that word. Can you say that as much as possible during this interview?
– Yeah I can say it. A little more whip to it. You can get a stiffer one for the bigger guys.
[hits puck] (Destin) I don’t understand how you can hit that hard. That’s crazy, I respect goalies a lot more now. OK let’s get the Phantom. Hoo I’ve fallen! [laughs] (Destin) Alright bring it. [hits puck] [hits ice] [hits puck] [hits ice] [hits puck] OK, so we got the close-up shot. Now what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna transition to a wide shot. We’re gonna keep the Phantom at 3,200 frames per second but the goal here, the data we’re looking for is we’re gonna try to pre-load that stick and get the entire flex, or the deformation of the stick while he goes in for the slap shot. The slap shot is the fastest shot in hockey. So what’s the advantage of having a flexible stick? Let’s check out the high speed. The player stores potential energy in the stick by striking the ice before he hits the puck. Now this seems like it would waste energy and slow down his shot but it actually does the opposite. By gradually releasing that potential energy stored up in the stick like a slingshot, the player can make the puck go even faster than he can swing the stick. Look at the overflex here as the stick outruns the player’s hands. [hits puck] This means that a good slap shot is all about timing. And not just the timing about where you’re gonna hit the ice, but also knowing how long it takes that stored up energy to whip out of your stick. So to understand the flexibility of a hockey stick we’re here with my friend Dr Jeff Evans We are friends, correct? Can I say that?
– We are friends.
– We are friends. I once tried to convince him to shoot a coyote in his pasture cause I thought.. no, it wasn’t a coyote.
– We thought it was.. he thought it was a coyote. It was a donkey.
– It was a.. [laugh] It was a donkey. You break things right?
– We do. We break things by pushing, pulling, twisting, fatigue, we wear them out, we break them.
– OK some bonus footage. We’re going to crush a hockey puck here. Check it out. 80,000lbs on a hockey puck. One interesting thing I discovered while doing this is hockey players often have no idea what the flex number on their stick means. If you support a stick on both sides here and you hang weights right on the center, that flex number that’s on every single hockey stick is an indication for how much weight it takes to deflect a hockey stick one inch. The problem is, often manufacturers don’t do it correctly so we have all these sticks from different manufacturers and Dr Evans is gonna take the data as I apply weight to the stick and we’re gonna measure the actual flex number against the claimed flex number. We hung calibrated weights from four different sticks, each with a different flex number. Then we recorded the deflection values for each stick and generated a curve representing its stiffness. The flex falue is the weight in pounds required to deflect the stick one inch. The numbers we measured however were much lower than the manufacturer’s numbers but this is probably because the sticks were used and they lost their stiffness over time. Check it out though. Real science. Let’s take a closer look though. A beam deflection equation can be used to model a hockey stick’s flex. This force represents the pivot hand and this force represents the stick hitting the ice. The maximum displacement happens right here in the middle where the player’s hand pushes on the stick. In engineering we use two types of diagrams called shear and moment diagrams to understand the stresses on the inside of a beam. So if our hockey player is strong enough to actually break a stick while doing a slap shot, according to science, where exactly along the stick is it going to break? [hits puck] – Did you get it?
(Destin) So where do you think it broke relative to where your hand was?
– Probably in it. – Like you think it was in your hand when it broke?
– Yeah. Oh yeah. – Alright let’s make sure I got it on slow mo. [hits ice] [scrapes ice] [hits puck] Did you see that? There are two types of loading that added up to break the stick. First he flexed it on the ice, but it wasn’t until he tried to actually accelerate the puck that it kicked it up over its maximum stress limit and actually broke the stick. That is awesome.     Now take one off the ankle bone blocking a shot. And you will know pain like no other, lol. Tell ya, I never played high end hockey, but in Canada it's still so competitive even at lower levels. Still remember this one D-man, he was a farm kid, well when I say kid, he was probably 6'2" 220lbs pure muscle and beard at the age of 16. When he would wind up for a slap shot, I blocked his shot once, and I was almost brought to tears, (hence my ankle comment) lol. After that, everyone would dive out of the way when he'd start his wind up. Poor goalie was terrified, lol, He broke the plexi glass a couple times as well.

    That was absolutely fantastic, although I am still lost trying to use your data to get the correct stiffness for the strength of the player. I assume the younger player use a wipper stick to max their shot velocity.

    Slap shots are like snapping your fingers. You don't take your middle finger and try to slap the base of your thumb with it; first you press it against your thumb to build up potential energy so that you can hit the base of your thumb harder. You don't hit the puck, you hit the ice to build potential energy to hit the puck harder.

    The manufacturers were actually not wrong, some sticks flex number is specific to a certain place on the shaft, which isn’t always in the middle

    did you count in the fact that some sticks have low, medium, and high flex points. Meaning each stick will bend a different spots in the stick.

    I would always respect a goalie! I never could play hockey because of a silly blood disease sapped my stamina when I was young – but I played Lacrosse when I was in my twenties! One time someone took a shot at our goal, and it hit the goalie between the legs. First he fell onto his knees and then fell forward onto his face, thank goodness he had a face mask on! After the game he walked down the aisle of the locker room and said, "I hope you all appreciate what I did for you today!" Then he reached into his jockstrap and pulled out a broken cup – broken in two. He had really taken it for us. Oh, and by the way, we did win!

    sticks have different flex points and kick points so some are stiff in the middle and ONLY flex in the bottom. so your test was incorrect

    I’m a professional hockey player and just wanted to say how cool that video was 👏🏼
    I honestly didn’t know what a stick really looked like when shooting a puck, the blade flexes so much. And how they are “supposed” to regulate the flex of a stick. Many sticks have different kick points, but as a general flex rule that was pretty cool.

    I wonder how many hockey players play golf? And I wonder if there are any players who can (or do) hit the puck without first running their stick along the ice? (like a straight hit to the puck, minimizing drag by avoiding the ice) Would it be a more powerful slapshot?

    you forgot about one thing. you mentioned that the companies are not quite accurate with the flex. however, you were putting the weights at the exact middle of the stick. different players prefer different “kickpoints” depending on the type of shots they take most. for example, a defenseman would most likely prefer a stick with a low kick point as he will be taking a lot of slapshot’s. whereas a forward would typically like the higher kickpoint as they take many snapshots and wristshots. that is where the flex should be applied to, not the middle of the stick.

    Some other interesting things of interest regarding hockey that I'd like to see are wrist shot puck control, and slap shot puck control…. different injuries, physics of shoulder and hip cheques: flipping people over… all in super slomo of course.

    Your experiments defining flex werent scientific at all. sorry there is more that goes in to a stick than it flexing right in the middle. Certain stick have different points where they are more stiff or not. Also a lot of the power comes from the blade of the stick whipping and not the actual stick

    I think different sticks have different flex points. Stronger higher towards the hands so they don't break easily. I also always wondered if hockey pucks have some type of either balance or the ribbing around the circular edge that helps the puck flow aerodynamically? Cause when playing and practicing with a real puck it could do things quite differently then let's say with a plastic practice outdoor puck. When I would snapshot the real puck it would sometimes dip then seem to rise higher and also hover a little while longer obviously also cause the heavier weight of the real puck. And while shooting on net like at home with a friend I used to go to the street and shoot down the driveway equivalent to a little over blueline and my friend would be in front of the net deflecting. Well for as long as he was comfortable deflecting sometimes not being able to see the Puck well or those riser shots freaked em out which I don't blame him. Lol we shot down the driveway right into my mother's garage door which had quite a few scuff marks but also two pucks seemed to impale themselves into the plywood planks which the door was made out of. Also pucks make a slight whizzing sound when they're flying by also.

    Hello smarter every day!! The reason why the sticks dont have as much or more flex than normal is because when you cut the stick it gives it a smaller and compact area. Take a piece of pasta when it gets really short it is harder to break just like if you were to cut a hockey stick!! I am a hockey player so If you have any more questions please do ask me!!

    5:59 how do you not understand it? its so simple. its a lot like basketball: two teams passing an object around and going from end to end trying to get it in a net. hockey is just on ice, has boards, sticks, and different rules

    I am a civil engineering student and I tried to derive formula for the deflection of the beam at the centre and I was actually able to do it like this is the first time I think I have used my knowledge for any practical purpose however small thay might be

    I have to say your wrong about one part. In the section about the stick flex you said that the maximum flex point is in the middle, however this only true for a mid-kickpoint stick. They also make high and low-kickpoint sticks

    To be fair if they were used they were also most likely cut, so the flex would actually be higher (stiffer) than what was written on the stick.
