Question, when changing gears on the shift column, is the clutch engaged at the same time as the gears are being changed or do you use the clutch first, and then also release it after the column has stopped moving?

In Norway you take a separate license for automatic cars. If you're taking driving lessons and exam using a car with an automatic transmission, that is all you can drive. You are not allowed to drive a car with a manual transmission – unless you take your drivers's test over again in a car with a manual transmission.

if you can't drive a stick shift in 3 days you might as well drive an automatic. I can't count how many times a new stick shift driver rolled back on a hill and hit the car behind them.

I think when to shift depends on the car

I usually shift at 3,000 or 4,000 RPM

But I’m new to this stick shift stuff so what do I know

You get WORSE MPG in a manual 9 times out of 10 since its not a computer controlled item the manufacturer can program.

Just do this, EASY WAY OUT- Press the clutch and lock the handbrake, shift into first, press the gas pedal till it redlines, till it touches the red line and release the clutch and handbrake together, you may see some smoke behind you but that is normal these days, there you go, easy and safe way to start 🙂 thank me later

for diesel cars you dont need to press throtle while you realising clutch ,they will start move .when you driving up to hill and need to stop ,you cand find a spot on the clutch where you can move feet from brake and car will not move ,if you struggle to move again and you have problem to move your right feet from the brake to the throtle while realising clutch, use the handbrake ,put right feet on throtle ,realise clutch ,put handbrake down and start move

It's not really true that you have to shift when reached a certain speed. It's about shifting when the RPM is too high. Some cares can take 2000 some can take 12000 without shifting, you have to find out when your cars engine is sounding too hard working.
