Hi, everyone! Autumn is a season for sports. Do you know any Japanese traditional sports? Have you ever tried martial arts before? I have been interested in trying
martial arts for a while now, and today finally I have
a chance to try one of them. Today I’m going to do kendō. Today, I’m here at 誠道館
(Seidō-kan) which is located in Nippori,Tokyo to have my first kendō experience. Let’s go!
(Migite wa tsuba no toko ni…)
“The right hand is on the guard…”
(Hidarite wa, kono tsukagashira to)
“And the left hand is at a point called”
(iimasu kedo koko ni, koyubi ga…)
“tsukagashira and the little finger is…”
(Soshite hidarite wa, daitai heso no mae gurai,)
“Then the left hand is around the front of your navel.”
(ni, hitonigiri, wangurippu akemasu.)
“Leave a space the size of a fist.”
(Wangurippu akemasu.)
“The size of a fist.”
(Soshite migite o toremasu.)
“And put back the right hand.”
(Sō suru to daitai aite no nodo ni kimasu.)
“It comes to an opponent’s throat.”
(Kore ga guddo desu.)
“This is…”
(Toriaezu wa men to kote to dō.)
“For now, mask, glove, and torso.”
(Go senjo aru?)
“Is there a mark?”
(Dō wa koko.)
“Here is the torso.” 面
(Men.)
“Mask.” 小手
(Kote.)
“Glove.” 胴
(Dō.)
“Torso.”
(Hai, dō.)
“Okay, torso.” 面
(Men.)
“Mask.” 面
(Men.)
“Mask.” 小手
(Kote.)
“Glove.” 小手
(Kote.)
“Glove.” 胴
(Dō.)
“Torso.” 胴
(Dō.)
“Torso.” 胴
(Dō.)
“Torso.” Kendō is a kind of Japanese martial art
based on traditional swordsmanship and it means, “the way of the sword”. There are various theories
on how kendō began. One is that kendō was developed from traditional techniques of Japanese swordsmanship. Nowadays, kendō is one of the
common club activities at school. Doing kendō can also improve more
focus, stronger spirit, and body strengths.
(Honto ni kore ga kekkō atsui desu ne.)
“This one is very hot.” It’s very hot.
(Te ga chotto tsukareta.)
“My hands are tired.” Come one. I’m strong.
(Kore ga dō.)
“This is a torso protector.” 小手
(Kote.)
“Glove.”
(Ago ga hainnai desu, a, haitta)
“I can’t squeeze my jaw… oh, I made it.”
(Kondo boku mo uchimasu.)
“Now I’ll beat you, too.” はい。
(Hai.)
“Okay.”
(Boku mo uchimasu kara ne.)
“I’ll beat you, too.” I am so tired, but it’s fun! How do you feel?
(Kekkō, kore tsuketeru kara daijobu
kana to omou kedo, itai.)
“You might think I’m fine with the protector, but it hurts.”
(Men, men, men…)
“Mask, mask, mask…”
(Hai, o-tsukare-sama deshita.)
“Thank you for your hard work.”
(Hai, owarimasu.)
“That’s all.” 礼。
(Rei.)
“Bow.”
(Otagai ni…)
“To each other…”
(arigatō gozaimashita.)
“Thank you very much.” It was harder than I thought and like it’s so hard to like strike and then strike again, like you need to be fast, but like, you’re just like tired like one
swing and then you couldn’t like… and you’re like, the sensei just gives you like, pang, pang, pang.
(Men, men, men…) That was fun.
(Ato, yappari suggoi shūchū shimasune.)
“I was really concentrating.”
(Kō, nan da rō.)
“How can I say…”
(kendō shiteru aida zutto shūchū shiteru kanji ga shite.)
“While doing kendō, I feel like I can concentrate.”
“It might help improve your concentration.”
(Ato seishin-ryoku)
“And your inner strength as well.”
(Kono kendō de sono hito no,)
“kendō is kind of…”
(nan te iun da rō?)
“How can I say it?”
(Kyarakutā toka sōiu no ga sugoi deru to omoimashita.)
“It shows your personality very well. I think so.”
(Sensei no me ga, sugoi pawā ga sugokatta desu.)
“The master’s eyes had a strong power.”
(Tama ni chiratto miru to pawā ga.)
“When I got a glimpse of them.” The people that have been doing it
there for a really long time were really good and they were
like really epic and intense. It was really cool. Okay.
(O-tsukare.)
“Good job.” Today’s keywords and phrases: 集中
(shūchū)
“concentrate” 竹刀
(shinai)
“bamboo sword” 防具
(bōgu)
“armor” 道具
(dōgu)
“equipment” 面
(men)
“mask” 小手
(kote)
“gloves” 垂れ
(tare)
“waist protector”. If you enjoyed this video,

Yeah, we all know that Risa is something! She's very good doing this kind of cultural presentation with teaching! We all like Risa a lot! A wonderful and natural personality!
But, we cannot forget the guys in the background! Video edition is great! I mean, it's AWESOME! it suit with Risa personality very well! It could be a girly or childish content, but it's very well maded content for everyone! The redators and camera, too!
    Well done, guys! Well Done!

The japanesepod101 is helping me a lot to learn japanese once for all! Learned to read Katakana and hiragana in one week. I use other apps, too, but this channel helps me a lot!

Here two things i think you guys could talk about:
    – Tokio Olyimpics foreign volunteering
    – And the very likely japanese sport!
KARAOKE! You guys know that we want to see Risa singing, right? Right! 😀
Show us where to find good karaoke in Tokio! The habits for a good Karaoke Jam e everything more!
I'd like to end this saying thanks to you, guys! Because i'm learning in the fastest, the easiest and in the most fun way! Keep it up, please!

    Greetings From Brasil!

Never liked the look of Kendo outfits. Especially the helmet. One reason I've never bothered with doing Kendo lessons.

I'd rather just do it the old fashioned way with a bokken and no armour.
Get hurt? Learning the hard way! You'll put in more effort to learn how to block that painful whack to the ribs etc.

From what I’m seeing this isn’t like the swordsmanship that was used back in the time of samurai, the blades back then were very brittle due to the high amount of carbon and the multitude of folding the brittle steel in the blade’s production, so these warriors tried to avoid blocking another blade with their own as it would do more ham than good, damaging the blade. So they were always going for kill shots and honing their skills so they never drag out the battles in order to keep their blade sharp and intact.

It's been said that good kendo practitioners aren't always good real sword fighters.
They require different mind set and technique.

For example, Kondo Isami, the leader of Shinsen-gumi(Assassin group hired by the Tokugawa regime in mid-1800s) was known as a lousy kendo practitioner but once he had the real sword in his hands, he was unbeatable, at least that's what the legend says.

But that doen's mean practicing Kendo doesn't add anything positive to the real sword fight, it does.

Kendo is just a sport, not a martial art, you can’t use it in real combat. The technique in kendo are unrealistic in real sword fight. Fencing is more realistic comparatively.

We also have kendo in the Philippines. Some 5th to 7th rank sensei always visit and teach us how to do the right way of kendo. And the first time for me was like this also(except the laughing and giggling, they were strict). But despite the pain, I still continue doing kendo. Most of the people who do kendo here don't have rankings yet because we have to go to hongkong if we want to take the test.
