The Ruck A ruck is a phase of play where
one or more players from each team, who are on their feet and in physical
contact, close around the ball on the ground. Many of the issues relating to
safety at the ruck are also covered in the earliest section – taking the ball
into contact. Support players bind on each other and
the opposition players, and drive over and pass the ball. The nearest support
player plays the ball. Referees should check that players are
on their feet and that players joining the ruck do so from behind the rear feet. Referees should also watch for players
coming in over the top, players rucking opponents rather than the ball, players
who intentionally collapse or jump on top of a ruck and players attempting to
gain possession using their hands.
