Maori All Blacks coach, Clayton McMillan has named
a powerful line-up today to face Fiji this Saturday in Suva. Here are some of the features
of the starting XV – hooker Ash Dixon captains the team, 1 test All Black Tyrell Lomax
is at prop. No 8 Akira Ioane
and halfback Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi will have a point to prove
to the All Blacks selectors. Meanwhile at fullback Fletcher Smith
of Ngati Kahungunu will debut for the Maori All Blacks. On the bench, All Black Nathan Harris will
make his debut with Haereiti Hetet. Outstanding loose forward
Whetukamokamo Douglas is also there, after helping the Crusaders win
their 10th super rugby title. Reporter Rapaera Tawhai is in Suva
with our team and joins us live, Rapaera. Yes, a formidable team
has been named by the coach. Two of these players
are also of Fijian descent. For Isaia Walker-Leawere
it’s a bit of a homecoming. His father, Kele Leawere,
is a former captain of the Fijians. We had a good intimate discussion
about that connection today. A battle against
the opposition and family. Isaia Walker-Leawere’ mother
is of Ngati Porou descent. He was raised in Ruatorea,
however, his father is from Fiji who happened to play
for the Fijian rugby side too. The lock has been selected to start. He says it’ a great honour. Fullback Fletcher Smith of Ngai Tahu
is the only debutant to make a start. He is very happy with his selection. He is also learning more
about his culture. Back to the field,
the coach knows of the big battle. A big game is ahead. Their first training in Suva
has just finished and the players are saying they are
getting used to the tropical heat and the strength of the sun here which is the most important
objective for them. Tomorrow, the team will get
to meet the community and share their talents
with the locals. Rapaera Tawhai,
thank you for that update.
