I’m Dr. Michael Smith, orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist. I grew up around orthopedics and sports medicine. My dad’s a physician here in the community. He took me to football games. I was on the sidelines with him and saw injured athletes whenever they come off the field and saw the impact that he would make. He was an early influence that just stuck with me throughout college and medical school. My patients inspire me by being resilient, and what I mean is, when you have somebody who’s been involved in a traumatic accident, and they’re off their feet for a while, and they’re just trying to get back to work, trying to get back to their job, trying to take care of their families, it’s remarkable to see and to be involved with the care that goes from the time of the injury until the time of recovery. I like practicing in Northwest Missouri just because first and foremost it’s close to home. It’s close to the people I knew and grew up with. I’ve had a great opportunity to travel all over the country for my training and nothing beats the midwest spirit here. People are down to earth and friendly, and will go out of their way to help you, and those kinds of people make for great patients.
