So we are in Kyoto and we are here at Hana Kushiage which is like a deep fried magic izakaya I love deep fried food. I feel like in America you joke about people having “Deep fried Ice cream” and “Deep fried Snicker bar” This deep fries everything for you. They got deep fried cheese here They got deep fried bacon! I mean… [S] You’re just gonna eat everything fried [M] We’re gonna eat everything If you come here, there is a like a dipping sauce. But the rule is, you can only dip once And they actually will charge you money if you dip twice. So no double dipping, okay? But I dont think that they trust us, so they are keeping the sauce far away from us [M] The safety sauce… [S] but we get our own so that’s fine [S] I’m so hungry… [M] No No! I could do this for hours Kushiage is literally just deep fried things on a stick and some places will do a couple of versions of it But this place has a massive, massive menu Not only do they have a massive menu, they are rated extremely highly in the neighborhood So we are going to like one of THE best places we could possibly go to Is it going to burn? Is it going to be molten lava hot? [S] No, no [M] Okay [M] Mmm [S] That is a perfect batter! That is so crispy! It’s not greasy! I don’t know how they made this not greasy. This is awesome! Some batter that you bite into you can just feel the oil coating your teeth. But this is just a beautiful cracker! oh my gosh I’m covered in sauce and I don’t even care you can really, really screw up frying if you don’t do it right and this place does it right [S] Oh~ [M] Right? I’m going to eat every [baeee] stick in this house! every [baeee] stick! No wait! don’t eat all of it! Save.. Look, I saved you an egg. Here’s an egg. Give me the chicken This is the last piece left in the whole place Ducky! you can’t do this to me. [M] You know who came here before us? [S] Who? [M] The Hound! [S] The Hound~ oh no~ This right here – this is Mochi cheese. Can you see the little cheese that has bursted through the side? Bursted! ‘Bursted’ is a word! Mochi cheese. This is pounded rice cake that’s chewy with cheese, white goopy low quality. [M] Oh~~~ This is amazing! Unbelievable! You have to have a bite. I will~ of your own Oh! I’ve had lots of pan-fried gyoza but an all over deep fried gyoza? That is a nice idea! Nice idea! And then we got tomatoes. Who ordered this shit? [M] I did! Who ordered this shit? [M] It was me! I want everything fried you don’t come to a fried place and order fresh tomatoes [M] My nose is mayonnaise (?) That’s an embarrassment everything has got to be fried! If it ain’t battered and fried, it ain’t right! Put those tomatoes back in the fryer. That’s how we gotta do this! [M] My new favorite Japanese word: ‘Ho-Ta-te.’ It’s for scallops and I learned it when I was eating okonomiyaki. [S] Scallops! [M] Damn right. Scallops Look at that juicing all over your hand So sweet! The outside is savory. Oh man! You know what’s weird? I’m like a greedy kid at Christmas, I’ve already had a whole bunch of sticks but whenever I see someone else eat a stick I’m like ‘But I want that one too!’ Temperature is fine Uhm, quick question. Did Simon just press deep fried shrimp onto his face? [S] I didn’t press it, you just hover it above [S] You’re like… ’cause your face… [M] is this like the baby milk when you’re like… [S] well yeah, because your face skin sensitive as well and you can see [M] but why would you stick it on your face?! [M] what if it was scalding hot? [S] Because I can smell it at the same time [M] you’d just have a huge line [S] you get a 2 for 1, you get a thermometer and you can lick it at the same time, see? [M] y’all please let me know on the comment section below. That was a terrible idea was it not? What? Hang on? If it was scalding hot? He would have a huge burn up here [S] I don’t put shit on my face I hover it on my face! [M] Anyways [S] You’re an amateur Martina had the shrimp last time and this is going to be my version of the shrimp You think I didn’t see you doing that, girl? Isn’t that nice? [S] oh man! [M] It’s sweet. It’s not like the normal shrimp that’s like flavorless, bland shrimp in North America, unfortunately oh yeah those curly frozen things you get in the bag that are just like texture? [M] this is like bright red and sweet tasting and the outside of it has the light crunchy batter We asked them and it is a Panko crust. So it’s egg and panko crust and it just cooked to perfection But they know the temperature. They know how to deep fry it so that, because some people think deep fried food it bad for you but actually if you deep fry it at the right temperature none of the oil actually gets into it. It’s when you deep fry it at a bad temperature that everything gets greasy and soggy Well this was a lovely, unhealthy meal. Fantastic! Just the kind of slightly greasy, not so greasy counter balance of things you drink. [S] Oh! [M] You know what I liked a lot about it? Everything! [M] Everything. But it didn’t feel like there was a lot of pressure. Some places you go to its like “Get in! Get out! Get lost!” This felt kind of like a slow moving place where you can just order, drink, and munch on… What are we doing right now? [M] I don’t know. This is the dance.     You've probably already discovered it, since this video is a couple years old, but there is a chain In Nagoya, not sure if they are in other places and I cannot recall the name, but it's a 'fry your own' restaurant, the tables have the hot oil in the center like a Korean grill and you pick the skewers you want (all you can eat) at the bar, batter and bread them and fry them at your table yourself. soooo amazing

    My boyfriend and I just went to this place for dinner tonight and OMG. IT'S BLOODY DELICIOUS! Thank you so much for reccomending this place! My man is a really picky eater and at this place, he ate everything 😂 totally wanna come back here again before heading over to Hakone and Tokyo!
