There were lots of smiles,
and lots of laughter. It seemed appropriate as it reflected the man
they had gathered to remember. Last night, as the funeral service
for Norm Berryman was taking place in Perth, whanau and friends
of the rugby superstar gathered for a memorial service
at his rugby club in Whangarei. Raniera Harrison was also there. 5000 km from Perth,
Australia, to Whangarei, but the pain still bites. In addition to the several hundred
mourners who turned out to the Pineroo Memorial Gardens,
in Perth, to pay their respects, another one hundred turned out
at Hora Hora Clubrooms to see the event
being live streamed from afar. The distance not being able
to parry the insatiable desire for his closest friends
and relations to see the funeral. Tributes were flowing fast and
freely from those that gathered. Who better than those who knew him
best to pay those tributes… From here at home, to Perth, his final resting place
on the other side of the Tasman Sea, no matter where he travels, his memory will still remain strong
despite the passing of the time. And even though
you have now left our sights, your great laugh still resounds
with your people. Raniera Harrison, Te Karere.
