Some say that if you are left handed your left hand is on the bottom for strength but that's shit.

I keep my left hand on top of a broom/shovel or any tool, and I am a right handed shot. My writing hand is right though. Everything just feels so much better with my left hand on top of the stick.

People are naturally neither left or right handed, but they are usually taught to write and throw with their right hand. Most everything else is generally up in the air. Since so many things are designed to work more easily right handed, other orientations will tend to sway to the right hand.

Lol. I always shot left. Then I switched school from Europe to US and was very confused as to why most sticks in gym were RH. It was a scramble to find the few LH sticks available and everyone asked me if I was a leftie :/. Americans got the whole stick thing wrong. I think it's because they just don't hold shovels as children.

Hi. I've been playing hockey for a bit more than a year. I write with my right hand and I have been shooting with my dominant hand on the bottom. If I try to shoot left it feels a little weird. Do you recommend starting to practice with my right hand on top or just keep going with my right hand on bottom.

I always used a right handed stick for street hockey. But I throw with my left. Sometime i find I have more power with one side but way more control with the other. I have a left stick in my room I once bought for someone on clearance but never got around to gifting it. I' ll give it a try tonight.

I am somewhat ambidextrous so this was a real struggle for me. I shovel in the way you describe although I think any self respecting Canadian would need their dominant hand on the bottom to haul as much snow up as possible. I also noticed that I broom the same way I hold my hockey stick too which for me was a big hint that this was the correct method for me. I played baseball before I played hockey as well and I think this is likely what imprinted this natural feel for me in my brain, for all my American friends in the south that wonder why Canadians and Europeans seem to be more left handed in hockey.

I'm right handed and I shoot right (Dominant hand on the bottom). I really think it comes down to preference.

I don't buy the theory about your dominant hand at the top makes you a better stick handler, the truth is most right handed players in the NHL are actually right handed people, and there are plenty of phenomenal right handed stick handlers.

Whenever I played ball hockey, I was a right handed shot. Even though I'm a right handed person. Now I'm playing net, and I have to learn how to shoot left handed, which means I'm actually learning how to shoot the "proper" way now. Hopefully in the next few years I will be able to shoot either way just as easily 😛

I have been having this argument with people lately. This is the way I teach my students as well, but most people (in America) seem to do it backwards. My guess is it has to do with parent's not understanding that right handed hooting sticks are NOT supposed to be for right-handed kids. If you buy the wrong stick for a kid at a young age, they'll learn to use it regardless of whether it is the "right" way for them or not.

I just started playing hockey 2 months ago, I used to play field hockey years ago so instinctively I picked up the stick in this way, left hand at the top, I’m a righty though. Watched your video and realised I’m holding the stick wrong. Should I stick with shooting right (like a lefty)? I’m so used to it, just wonder if I’m going to suffer with stick handling with my non-dominant hand on the top? Personal preference I guess…any wisdom on this? Btw you’re awesome. 🙂

Here's the REAL question. Why do people call it a right handed stick if it is better for left handed people? It's like plugging cables into a TV. Red on red, white on white, yellow on yellow, so by that logic, a right handed dominant person should get a stick labelled right handed.

I tried switching to holding with my right hand on top of stick. What ended up happening is my left hand, or the bottom hand now attempts to control the ball or puck, so I am wired in such a way to control the ball or puck with the bottom hand.

As a kid, I tried using a left shot stick, and it didn't feel comfortable, due to the fact that I got so used to holding the stick and puck handling wrong.

I just bought a right handed stick too. Looks like I'll have to buy a left handed stick. Another $110 down the drain.

Dominant hand on top for precision.
Dominant hand on bottom for power.

Do you use an canoe oar with the dominant hand on top or bottom?

For brooms, if you are one of those who does those tiny sweeps, then usually your dominant hand is on top. If you are like me, and broom in such a way where you literally push the broom into the floor and drag it, then your dominant hand is in the bottom.

The way I use a broom is the same way as how people usually row a boat, unless, not only have I been sweeping the floors wrong, but I also imagining myself rowing a boat wrong too.

However when i stop my right foot leads which didn't give me a set up for my shot. I am right dominant and shoot righty. The first time I ever picked up a hockey stick was one of my father’s lefty sticks, and it just felt so wrong. Shooting righty didn’t really seem like a choice but a predisposition. Now as an adult, I’ve done some experimenting with shooting lefty, and I can get the same power and speed with both hands according to radar, but I definitely feel a great deal more accurate, confident and natural shooting righty. It would be interesting to see how my stickhandling may have improved had I tried to adapt to lefty as a small child and also to see if it would’ve ever begun to feel as natural to shoot that way.

My prime for hockey was 17 years ago and i dont remember anyone talking about this. You write right, you shoot right thats what i was taught. I also dont remember sticks being so individualized . Wood or aluminum, Heavy curve or slight curve. I used a wooden Choffey for like 12 years. It weighed 5 pounds and had a curve that was just below illegal. My kids are now getting into hockey i'll have to try to retrain my brain, pick up a new stick and give it a go.
