♪ Cookin’, gonna make us some food now ♪ It’s a bit of a cool night tonight, and we
were sitting around the fire. And I was thinking, ‘you know, I remember
back when I used to go to scouts. We used to make this thing called…’ and I
was just trying to remember what it was called. It was Squiggly Damper. Squiggly Damper. And I don’t know whether you remember or whether
you went to scouts yourself, or the girl guides or whatever, but I remember you’d make up
this damper. And you’d wrap it around a stick, and then
you’d cook it up on the fire, on the coals. And then when you pull the thing off the end
of the stick, you’d fill it with syrup and you’d eat it. Well, I tell you what. How about we step back in time, and let’s
bring a few of those awesome memories back to when we were at scouts or at girl guides,
and we weren’t even teenagers back then. And we had our Squiggly Damper. So let’s give it a whirl. It’s easy enough to make. The hardest part is sitting beside the fire
cooking it. And I might get Simon involved in this one,
so I’ve sent him off to get me a couple of sticks. Because you’re going to need some good sticks. You got your sticks ready, mate? That do the job? Perfect. So you make it like you normally make a damper. So that means we’ll just whack a bit of flour
in a bowl. About that much. Sultanas. Crack an egg in. A bit of desiccated coconut. Just a little bit. Alright, we’ve got a little bit of cream. So let’s get the cream out. I’ve got a little bit of milk, so I’m going
to put a bit of that in. You want this a little wetter than normal,
because we’re going to try and roll that up. The reason why we roll it is because we’re
going to try and put it on a stick. And then we’re going to use the deck here
to roll it out. Just so we can manage it a bit better. A bit of flour on my hands. Sprinkle on top. Simon, you there, mate? You want to bring your sticks over and we’ll
give this a bit of a whirl. So what we’re going to do is, I’ll put that
bit over there. This bringing back memories, mate? Dozens of them. You didn’t go to scouts, did you? No. I didn’t do scouts. All right, so we’re going to try and wrap
this around our stick. So this is the hard part. First of all, we need to put a bit of butter
on the stick so it doesn’t stick. That’s going to fall straight off the stick. It is, isn’t it? We need to sort of kneed it in a bit. Make it a bit tighter. You don’t want it too loose. You actually want to make it a bit more doughy,
don’t ya? We’re looking better now. That looks better. All right. Go this stick first. This stick’s got a bit of body about it. Just wrap it around there. We’ll put some butter on. There’s not a single straight stick in this
whole friggin’ bush. I think these two over here are taking the
piss, mate. Our cameramen have got big smiles on their
face. Something’s going on. They’re having little chuckles. All right, does that look about right? That looks great. All right. Let’s wrap it around our stick. Look at that, mate. Yeah, that’s all-time. The trick with it is, you stick it onto the
stick like that. Just roll him around this way a bit. Look at that. Perfect. All right. Hold on to that. Just put that one over here. Just stick him on the bench there. Hold that one. Put a bit of butter on this one too. Grease me up. This is just wrong in so many ways. Yours is longer and skinnier than mine. Yes. Really different, you know. Everyone’s different. All right. Here we go. Looks like one of those sea slugs you get
in the rock pools up north. What do they call them? All right, here we go. We’ll try and
get this thing on the stick now. Wrap it round. You can see why they call it squiggly damper. Watch that bit, I’ll just drop that bit. Look at that one. That’s mine, that one. Now you’ve just got to sit there and hold
it and cook it, don’t we. Pretty much. All right. Let’s go over to the fire. Let’s take our squiggly damper and go check
it out. As easy as that. All right, here we go, mate. It’s nice and warm over here near the fire,
that’s for sure. Smokin’ hot. I don’t think you need it too close to the
coals either. You’ll burn it. Oh, is that right? It’s hot. About that. It’s looking pretty tasty. It’s got all the good stuff in it. Mine’s pretty good. Oh yeah, it’s not bad. It’ll be good. All right. Let’s go over here. All right, here we go. Got it all cooked and ready to go. The trick now is– I’m going to grab a plate. We’ll chuck that on a plate. So you’ve gotta sorta peel that off like that
and whack it on the plate. I’ve only got little bits so I’ve put a bit
of butter on it. A bit of butter and a bit of syrup, I reckon. All right. I’ll pull that off there. All right, mate. There we go. Hook her in. Maybe it was called Piggy in the Hole. Was that it? That doesn’t sound right. Doesn’t sound right? Damper on a Stick. Damper on a stick. We put a bit of syrup in there. Down the hole. You gotta be happy with that. It’s not bad, eh? Bloody good. Well there you go. I’m going to make another bit, and then I’m
going to sit back next to the fire. Bring back all those favourite memories from
your childhood. Squiggly damper on a stick.
