(BETWEEN 1928 AND 1956,
INDIA MEN’S HOCKEY TEAM) (SCORED 178 GOALS
AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES) (AND CONCEDED ONLY 7 GOALS) (7.43 GOALS PER MATCH) (25-GAME UNBEATEN STREAK) (6 GOLD MEDALS) (LAND OF LEGENDS) (INDIA, LAND AREA –
328 MILLION SQ KIOMETRES) (2ND MOST POPULOUS COUNTRY
WITH OVER 1.3 BILLION PEOPLE) (SANSARPUR, A SMALL VILLAGE
WITH ONLY 4061 PEOPLE) (PRODUCED THE LARGEST NUMBER) (OF HOCKEY OLYMPIANS
PER SQ FOOT) We produced 14 Olympians. And among the 14,
nine played for India and four played for Kenya and one played for Canada. All nine Indian players
have won Olympic medals. The main issue is
how hockey has changed from 10-12 years back. Hockey had tactics like
position play and it was slow. But, in these 10 years, hockey
has become extremely fast. Because of Astroturf,
players move faster, so the equipment has changed. Kids used to play
with wooden sticks, now they play with
graphite ones. Astroturf is
the biggest difference in terms of training
from previous times since we have not gotten
used to Astroturf here because it has
only been 6 years since Astroturf has
been introduced here. Then there are
problems of equipment. As the number of
players increases, more equipment is required. Another problem
is of consistency. The kids take 1-2 days to rest
after playing for 2-3 days. After they’ve rested, we face
the challenge to bring the kids back to form as their stamina
and will to play decrease. These are some of the problems
we are currently facing. (TODAY, THE PASSION FOR FIELD
HOCKEY STILL RUNS DEEP) (IN SANSARPUR’S DNA.) I love playing hockey. One can get famous
from the sport. It has also instilled
discipline in me. And it becomes a routine
and then I love the game. I feel privileged
to be playing on such a ground
and in this village. And I always feel delighted because the atmosphere
is fantastic and the coaches are good. The kids come here because
they want to play the game. We spread awareness
about the game by going to different schools
and nearby villages. We also speak to the parents and ask them to send
their kids for coaching. We start kids with the basics. We train them how to walk. We work on their grip
and teach them how to hold the stick properly. And how
to move with the ball. Then we have hurdles and
speed ladders to improve their speed even while
running with the ball. We create a training
schedule for them. Like, in the morning,
they may be working on their
physical development. Training includes hurdles,
sprints and medicine balls, and then in the evening,
they will work on their skill
development. OK, good luck,
thank you very much. When I used to play,
we had role models. Those who played for
the country, they were in the village, they used
to practise over there. I’ve seen them practise
in the village. When they were
already Olympians. So we were learning while
they were at play. And our people, our original
people from the village, they started going to
Canada, England, America. They’ve gone abroad for
greener pastures, better jobs. (2013 SAW THE INTRODUCTION
OF A MAJOR) (PROFESSIONAL HOCKEY
LEAGUE IN INDIA) (SINCE 2014, HOCKEY INDIA ALSO
STARTED HOSTING) (THE FINALS OF THE MEN’S FIH
WORLD HOCKEY LEAGUE) (THESE HAVE CREATED FRESH BUZZ
AND INTEREST) (TOWARDS HOCKEY IN INDIA.) Herman Black, can he keep India
from bronze? No, he can’t! Rupindar Pal! Well, who would have believed
it, the game he had tonight? But he is going to be
the hero… Dejected, they shake hands with
the umpires. But the crowd have gone wild
here in Raipur… Hockey India is
doing a good job in conducting, first
of all, the league. Their players
are getting money, because money is required. You can’t compare this money
with cricket players, or with soccer players,
like Ronaldo or Messi. But money is required, money is being given to most
of the players. They are getting good jobs. (VARUN KUMAR, INDIA NATIONAL
JUNIOR HOCKEY TEAM, (PUNJAB WARRIORS, 2016 LEAGUE
CHAMPIONS) A lot of international
players take part in the league and we learn
a lot of things from them. Their discipline,
work ethics and the way they interact
with others. It’s always great to play
with the national players because they come
from different states. So you know they have to get
along well and motivate and encourage others because
it’s team work and team effort. I got to learn a lot
from the league. I learnt a lot from Australia’s
number 3 goalkeeper. He taught me how to put
pressure on the ball, how to stop the ball, etc. I’m working hard, and I’ve
improved my game drastically. They’re getting a lot
of confidence when they are meeting
the world top players. So things have changed. We
were very shy in those days. We never used to meet,
we never used to talk. Now people are talking,
they’re mixing up, and learning about
other cultures. So when you learn the culture,
when you mix with players, then you’re bound
to improve the team and they’ve started
enjoying it. When you’re enjoying
anything, you’re bound to improve your performance. So, that way, it’s a good sign.
The revival is there, So, within a couple of years, I think, we should
face the podium. (LAND OF LEGENDS)

First thing first- govt has to stop interfering in hockey. They change the coach every 6 months and you see a new team in every tournament. It's very frustrating for players when they feel insecure about their career.
Secondly Indian players must be allowed to play in the European leagues . They must be sponsored by the board. The league's are the reason why Belgium has emerged has a hockey powerhouse today whereas 15 years ago Belgium was just ok.
I feel that Indian hockey players play more for their country than for money and glamour. And their fitness is the best in the country( any player in that squad can make kohli run for his money). They need the right atmosphere to develop and currently that's not the case.
